I just completed a new workbench.  The drawer fronts, cabinet doors, and work surfaces are all made from 3/4" red oak and cost $0.  Here's the trick: any people are renovating their homes and one of the more popular renovations is the removal of old carpet in favor of new hardwood flooring.  The installers throw away (or burn) about 10%!  If you ask, they are usually happy for you to remove their "scrap."  Sure, some is warped, split, or missing the tongue and grove but some is just perfect.  Hey, guys - there's free oak out there and it's on it's way to the land fill. - Gene Workman, Thomson, GA
