While refurbishing my kitchen cabinets, I wanted to face them with 1/8"-thick veneer made from some cypress boards I had on hand. But sadly, my band saw wasn’t large enough to resaw them. I hated the thought of planing the lumber down. Instead, I discovered this trick.

I first surfaced the boards so their faces were smooth and parallel. Then, with my table saw, I ripped a kerf down the center of each long edge. This still left about 2" of wood in the center that the saw blade couldn’t reach.

I finished the cut with a hand saw and planed the sawn faces to the veneer thickness I needed. Because the kerfs helped guide the saw, handsawing was fast and remarkably easy.
