I use my band saw and a plywood sled with a bar clamp mounted to it to cut short logs into boards. Although the sled works well to hold the logs securely, I used to have a tough time drawing straight cutting lines on the curved, bark-covered surface. It wasn't until I picked up an inexpensive laser level that I finally "saw the light."

I mounted the laser to a tall support arm on the back of the sled and made a slotted base for the arm so it slides back and forth along a carriage bolt. A wingnut and washer lock it in place.

Now, resawing is easier than ever: I just turn on the laser and aim it down on the log to create a perfectly straight reference line for my next cut.
