This past spring, Makita joined the emerging class of compact routers by launching the 1.25hp (peak) RT0700C Trim Router in a fixed base. At the same time, the company also unveiled the same tool in the RT0700CX3 kit version
, which includes a fixed base, offset base for close-quarters work, a tilt base and — of probably greatest appeal to most woodworkers — a plunge base. The motor pack, which engages into all four bases with a tool-free cam lock, has a machined aluminum housing for durability. Internal electronics include electronic variable-speed control, which adjusts from 10,000 to 30,000 rpm, while maintaining constant speed under load. Soft start helps to prevent torque twisting when the router is turned on.
The tool's plunge base has a three-position turret with adjusters at each turret level, and the depth stop rod includes a micro-adjust feature plus a push-button macro adjust. Maximum plunge depth is 1-3/8 in. The motor's flat top and spindle lock make for easier bit changing; the tool will accept either 1/4- or 3/8-in.-shank bits. A pair of vac attachments improve dust collection for either the fixed base or plunge base. Two steel guide collars are also included with the kit for template work, plus an edge guide and ball-bearing trimmer guide.
Makita even provides a side handle that can be threaded into the base plate of the offset base or used in place of one of the round rubber handles on the plunge base for added control during use. A large padded carry case with a removable divider stores this kit's many accoutrements. The RT0700CX3 is available through Makita's distributors for $239.
