The world of both woodworkers and comics fans was devastated Sunday when Warner Brothers announced that Matt Damon, 43, would be stepping into the role of Craftsman's superhero The Technician in the studio's upcoming Superman vs. Batman film.
Fan reaction to the film online has moved from light complaints about the more serious, production heavy portrayal of Superman by Henry Cavill in 2013's Man of Steel to uproar when it was announced that Ben Affleck would replace Christian Bale as Batman in the film. However, the furor on social media reached critical levels when Damon was tabbed for the beloved Technician role.
“I can't believe that some no talent hack like Matt Damon could be picked to play one of the most iconic roles in the history of DC Comics!” said Manny “TechnicianFan316” Drel on the DC Comics Facebook page. He later added, “I'm totally waiting until this comes out on DVD.”
Woodworking fans were equally upset over the news. The Woodworking.com forum page was alight with the news of the move, many reacting angrily to the casting of woodworking's most beloved Craftsman-sponsored superhero.
“Matt Damon doesn't know a miter joint from a miter saw,” forum member Skewperman42. “What gives him the right to think he can play our hero?”
The Technician has gained a rabid following ever since his epic one issue run in 2012. The comic's story tells the harrowing tale of a lonely woodworker who must face down the darkest evils of the world armed only with a nine-piece bolt-on tool system with a Li-Ion rechargable battery. Director Zack Snyder says he “can't wait” to bring the gritty, realistic character to the silver screen.
“If you ask me what character best represents the modern comic book fan, I would say 'The Technician,'” Snyder said at the press event. “Here's a guy, he's just a normal, guy. A woodworker. But he rises up out of that and saves the world. And he does it all in one comic book. Incredible. To me, that's the story. That's Matt Damon.”
Damon nodded then added, “I guess it'll be cool to work with Ben again.”
Toys are already hitting the marketplace, as an impressive number of Technician-themed merchandise is being produced for this year's shopping season. The character is getting his own Leg-go set, video game, EZ Bake Oven, DVD cartoon, and even a Vegas slot machine. Additionally, the character is rumored to be getting a doll in the next line of Bar-B toys.
There was a rumor circulating on Twitter hours later that the the project may be changed to become The Technician vs. Superman vs Batman given the popularity of the character and the marketing potential of tiny plastic hardhats and multi-tools. Plans could be announced as soon as the San Diego Comic-Con July 24th, during the Technician panel in Hall H.

Meanwhile, pictures are already starting to surface from the set of the film, scheduled to open in 2016, of Damon walking around in costume. Fans have pointed out that Damon is not wearing The Technician's trademark grey Craftsman coveralls and red “C” logo, as further proof that Snyder and company are not capable of taking this character seriously.
Snyder responded in a tweet, “lol we're filming the origin scenes right now. where'd he come from, where'd he get his multitool etc. just u wait!!!!”
To better research the role, Damon was later seen shopping at a Sears.
