Powermatic
is laying all of its cards on the table with the new 4224B Lathe,
likening it to the Lamborghini or Stradivarius of lathes. And, given
the impressive standard features that come on this new 950-lb.
machine, that just might be an apt description. The lathe provides 42
in. of working distance between centers and a 24-in. swing over bed.
Its headstock, tailstock, legs and bed all are cast-iron, to dampen
vibration and add stability for big turnings. Two inch diameter
adjustable feet level it on uneven shop floors. The headstock
features a 3hp, three-phase motor with built-in converter for
incoming singe-phase power. Electronic variable speed enables
infinite adjustment of the spindle between 40 and 3,500 rpm, and a
digital readout tracks the current speed. Forward and reverse
rotation will promote both conventional turning and sanding
reversing, difficult grain. A 98-position indexing system makes it
easy to set up evenly spaced turning details. Open access eliminates
the need to remove the headstock cover to change between settings,
and a spindle lock engages by pressing a button to attach or remove
workpieces. A Venturi system provides a fully integrated solution for
vacuum chucking. The headstock can be rotated for outboard turning,
too. A comparator system on the machine provides a mount for
duplicating tasks so a second turning is within easy reach for
measurement and visual comparison.
The
behemoth machine also comes with a 14-in. tool-rest, cam-action
locking devices for the headstock and tailstock and an impressive
array of electrical extras: twin 100-watt task lights, four 115-volt
outlets for powering other tools and an On/Off switch that can be
positioned anywhere along the lathe bed using a magnetic base.
Accessories include 20- and 63-in. extension beds, which boost the
bed length to a total capacity of 62 in. or 105 in. respectively. A
guard and tool storage rack come standard. The machine, which is
available now, has a street price of $7,499.99. The 20-in. bed
extension package will add another $1,472 to the sticker price, and
the 63-in. extension sells for $2,753.
