Wood art from around the country is entered in competition, put on display and sold at this enjoyable and educational two-day event. This show draws over 100 wood artists from Wisconsin and around the country: carvers, pyrographers, chippers, sculptors, painters and more. You will be impressed by the many creative things these artists and skilled craftspeople do with wood from simple whittling to detailed carving of realistic birds, fish, animals, people, caricatures, jewelry, spirit faces, whimsical houses, walking sticks, gun stocks, and three-dimensional scenes.
Competition judging occurs Saturday morning and afterward all entries and winning pieces will be on display. Entries are in many categories at various skill levels so look for the ribbon winners and Best of Show. As you walk around the hall, take time to stop and visit with the wood artists. They enjoy sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm with other carvers and“wannabe” carvers. You might even want to do some early holiday shopping or buy a “just because it’s unique and I want it” item.
Be sure to meet this year’s featured carver: Ron O’Kray. Ron is an easy going guy who loves to teach about wood, woodcarving and techniques. He will have years of his handiwork on display. Ron lives in Stevens Point with his wife Marion who is an irreplaceable hands-on supporter and member of the club. A well-rounded carver, Ron works in various woods and does several types of carving, such as in-the-round and relief work. Ask him what he enjoys carving the most and he might tell you it’s carving spoons - but not just any old spoons - check them out.
Demonstrations of carving, pyrography, and knife sharpening will be held throughout both days. Kids Carving Classes are scheduled for Saturday at 3pm and Sunday at 1:45pm. These are always well attended and parents can join in, too. Carving tools, supplies, books, patterns and wood will be on sale by vendors Larry and Carol Yudis’ Woodcraft Shop, Kranz Wood Sales and Moore Roughouts. Their products are excellent, yet at reasonable prices, so it is a good time to stock up.
Enter the huge raffle of handmade carvings, art and other specialty items on display both days with drawing Sunday at 3:30pm (need to be present to win). The club thanks its members for the many unique pieces donated to the raffle. Thanks also to this year’s show sponsors: American Family Insurance agents James Check and Lori Bustamante, Dave’s Body Shop, Dennis Hintz Excavating & Septic Systems, Inc., Do It Best Frank’s Hardware, Journal Print Group, Len Dudas Motors, Mid-State Accounting, Point Bowl, Point Trophy, Pro Septic Service, and Ski’s Meat Market.
The Wisconsin River Woodcarvers Club has grown from 18 members in 1995 to 89 members today.
