A few of the words that come to mind when you think of the Arts & Crafts style are Gustav Stickely, quartersawn oak, and mortise and tenon joinery. You’ll see all of them in the Arts & Crafts Picture Frame pattern you’ll find below.
Many woodworkers like to make their mortise and tenons using a jig system. For those who may have found the Leigh FMT jig to be out of their price range, the new Super FMT from Leigh, this issue's Free Plans page sponsor, is meant to address that issue.
Maintaining the same size and bits as the regular FMT, the Super, too, can produce over 70 sizes of mortise and tenons, ranging in size from 1/16" x 1/8" to 1/2" x 5"; single, double, triple and quadruple joints; and angled and compound angled joints. The Super FMT, though, is priced at about half what the FMT costs. Its parts are made from punched and formed steel or injection molded plastic instead of precision cast.
It's a new tool that just might come in handy for a classically styled project like the Arts & Crafts Picture Frame.
