Hand-sewing may be a skill that's largely forgotten these days,
but the Shakers did it on a daily basis; the use of electric sewing
machines was against their religious principles. Consequently,
furniture intended to make sewing easier came in many forms, including
this sewing stand. It provides a good chance to spend some time at the
lathe.
