Porter Cable 7529 Router in the UK from Women In Woodworking
Her old DeWalt 621 router can only handle 1/4" bits and this American woodworker in England is ready for an upgrade. Porter-Cable 7529 is on sale now, but she's seen both positive and negative reviews and now looks to the forum for "objective" guidance.

PC 7529

A current owner of two PC routers (one plunge and one fixed base) declared that they worked great and had plenty of accessories available -- replaceable base plates to accept larger bits, template guides, and micro adjusting fence, etc.

On the other hand, another poster and well-known router book author noted that the 7529 had switch problems and many recalls to the point where it was reissued as a 7539. And like the DeWalt 621, both the 7529 and 7539 are dedicated plunge routers, presenting another limitation. She suggested considering a Porter-Cable or Bosch fixed base router. (Unfortunately, as the original poster later explained, fixed routers are practically nonexistent in the UK, and the fixed based PC is not available.)

Then again, a third post explained that a 1/2" collet was available for the DeWalt 621, which has a weight she prefers for hand-held work. With that accessory available, the only drawback she found with the 621 was that the dust extraction tube didn't do much extracting and got in the way of the fine adjustment knob. (Again, unfortunately, the original poster noted that for some reason, the UK DeWalt 621 was constructed so the 1/2" collet could not be installed.)

There was also some discussion of power converters used to adapt US models to UK voltage. The original poster thought that single speed tools could be converted, but anything with a speed control, like a mixer or a router, would tend to burn up. And all in all, the thread sadly ended with little recourse for her.
