Using Lye to Darken Wood

Do you know of any formula or procedure for using lye to darken wood?

John Brock: A couple of tablespoons of lye granules in a quart of warm water will darken some woods, like cherry. White vinegar will stop the effect. If you try this, wear appropriate gloves and eye protection, and work in a well-ventilated place. Lye can be pretty nasty stuff.
