What Are Your Favorite Finishes?
September 20th, 2010 by Chris Marshall9 Comments »
Whether we like the process of finishing or not, no woodworking project is really complete without slathering on some protective finish. Years ago, I was a “poly” only kinda guy. Back in the 1980s, oil-based polyurethane is pretty what seemed to fill the hardware store shelf under the “Wood Finishes” sign. So, that’s what I used. It smelled bad and dried slowly, but once the finish finally hardened up, it was fairly tough. And I could count on its consistency and characteristics every time.
I’m glad to say that my finishing palate has expanded some since then. (more…)

Delta’s New Melamine Blade Cuts Like a Laser
September 10th, 2010 by Chris Marshall2 Comments »
This morning, it was time to conduct an unofficial tool test.
About two months ago, Delta mailed me one of their new 60-tooth melamine-cutting blades and asked me to give it a try. Despite the fact that saw blades don’t show up at my doorstep for free very often (actually, I can’t remember when the last time was), it’s been sitting in my blade holder for a while now. Here’s the reason: I’m not a big fan of melamine. I don’t use it often in my projects precisely for the reason that they’ve designed this specialty blade—melamine’s thin coating chips like crazy when you cut it.
At least with an ordinary saw blade it does.
Reader-Submitted Miter Station
September 6th, 2010 by Matt Becker2 Comments »
With all of the interest we’ve seen on Chris Marshall’s Ultimate Miter Saw Station, we knew it was only a matter of time until we started getting photos from readers of the ones they built themselves…
Here’s a picture of the Miter saw station I built. I am going to make the drawers later on. I used Birch plywood and Aspen for the face frame, and applied a couple coats of poly. I have a Craftsman 12″ sliding compound miter saw. I’ve gotten a lot of compliments on the stand. I just got into the woodworking hobby. I’m a handy man now and hope to become a real woodworker some day.
Thanks for your service to the hobby,
Pete
