With the holidays in full swing, and workshops in at least some parts of the country now covered in snow, it’s high time to crank up those old familiar Christmas standbys. As you are working your way through your last-minute gift projects — and maybe burning some midnight oil in the process — here are a couple of holiday tunes we recently ran across on Micro Fence’s website to help keeps spirits bright (click here).

Share the Experience

For the most part, woodworking has been a solitary activity for me. Over the years, I’ve taught myself most of what I know. I’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way — and either cursed or laughed about them without any witnesses or commiserators. At the same time, by going it “solo” so much of the time, I haven’t really shared the successes and breakthroughs that also happen as we gain experience. It’s been a pretty quiet life in the shop.
Then the other day a new friend of mine asked me to do a small commissioned piece for him. He’s a pipe smoker and wanted a pipe (more…)

Guitar Build Afterglow

A couple of weeks back, I had the opportunity to join my boss, Rob Johnstone, and George Vondriska — one of our frequent contributors — in Chicago at Craftsman Experience. Both Rob and I have been there before to give various demonstrations, and you may have caught some of that coverage late last year. This time around, though, our triumvirate efforts were focused on a very worthy cause as well as some fun woodworking. We were building a kit guitar to donate to Guitars For Vets. These folks provide guitars and lessons free of charge to veterans who are trying to cope with the after-effects of overseas combat.
What’s Your Tool Review Wish List?

Magazines are a funny business when it comes to keeping track of time. Here at Woodworker’s Journal, we’re waiting for the December issue to hit the mail—(that’s happening real soon, by the way). In the meantime, we’re deep into production on the January 2011 issue, despite the fact that it isn’t even mid October yet. That’s how publishing goes. Sometimes, between print assignments, our eZine tasks and planning ahead, I forget exactly which month I’m currently in. My wife, however, won’t accept “job” as a reason for my forgetfulness. She’s convinced these are actually the onset of “senior” moments…
Challenging My Own Claim

A few weekends ago, I ended up proving a point to myself without really setting out to do it. I needed to make a couple of boxes, and I wanted a quick but elegant solution for joining the corners together.
As it turns out, I’ve been a little delinquent lately in getting my tool test tools returned to their proper owners. It’s been pretty busy here in the shop since Christmas, and those shipping tasks keep getting pushed further down my to-do list. So, I still have the Keller 1601 Pro Series Dovetail Jigs here from our December ’09 dovetail jig review. My bad, but actually, a good coincidence.

To that end, we’re happy to announce that the April print issue of Woodworker’s Journal is headed to your mailbox and should be arriving shortly. With any luck, it will bring us all warmer weather and longer days! Here’s a quick look at some of the great new content you’ll find inside:
