A Quick Look at the New April Issue

Punxsutawney Phil might be taunting us with the promise of an early spring, but winter here in Ohio (where I live) still holds us in an icy grip. Still, like the postal carriers vow, neither snow nor sleet will keep us here at the magazine from bringing you new projects, tools and techniques in your April issue. And, in just a few days, those diligent mail carriers will be bringing a copy to you. But, why wait? Here’s a quick rundown of what’s coming your way.

Scroll-Sawn Ginger Jar

Although I confess that I had to look up what a ginger jar actually is, this project caught my eye with its use of multiple wood species, and the fact that it was made with a scroll saw is even more impressive.

This Ginger Jar is made from cherry. The base as well as the top of the lid are made from walnut.

This project was made using a DeWalt DW788 and a 2″ flexible bowl sander. The pattern is from Carole Rothman’s book Wooden Bowls from the Scroll Saw. Many of the people I have shown it to made the comment that it was a “nice turning.”

The Ginger Jar stands about 7 3/4″ high and 6 1/2″ wide at the middle point.
