JET is targeting its new JOSS-S Oscillating Spindle Sander at woodworkers who are serious about sanding curves efficiently and cleanly. Powered by a 1hp TEFC motor inside the machine’s steel cabinet, the sander’s worm and gear drive turns the spindle at 1,720 rpm. That gearing generates 75 oscillations per minute, with the spindle traveling 1-1/2-in. in order to help speed the sanding process along as well as reduce heat buildup and extend the life of the abrasives.
User convenience of this new sander is improved in a number of ways. For one, the machine’s spacious 24-1/2-in.-square cast-iron table is positioned at a comfortable working height of 39-3/16-in. from the floor. There’s also a spindle lock located under the table to make installing or removing spindles a one-wrench operation. The table tilts 45 degrees forward and 15 degrees backward, and it can be locked at any point in between for precise sanding angles. And, when a tilted operation is finished, the table has a 90-degree quick index to return it to level again.
JET provides 10 spindle diameters and abrasive sleeves for this machine, including 1/4-, 3/8-, 1/2-, 5/8-, 3/4-, 1-, 1-1/2-, 2-, 3- and 4-in.-dia. sizes. There’s integrated storage in the cabinet for all of these supplies, plus the table inserts for each spindle size and magnetic strip for stowing the wrench.
To help you breathe easier during sanding, the JOSS-S also has a 4-in.-dia. dust port for connecting to a dust collector. And, a flexible, accordion-style baffle below the table creates a chamber for channeling dust effectively from the source. The locking cabinet door is also sealed to keep out sanding dust.
Weighing 216 lbs. and backed by a 5-year warranty, JET’s JOSS-S Floor Model Oscillating Spindle Sander (model 723950) is available through JET dealers and online now. It sells for $1,499.99.
