The RT0700C Compact Router from Makita, at 7-7/8″ long and 3.9 lbs., is “actually the size and weight of many laminate trimmers,” says woodworking product manager Joe Soto. Instead, though, it’s a 1-1/4hp router with a variable speed control dial ranging from 10,000 to 30,000 rpm speeds to be matched to an application. The flat top is meant to be convenient when you’re changing bits (it uses 1/4″ shank bits), and the base removes quickly to install other bases, with a quick-release cam lock system designed to make this and depth adjustments easy. The depth adjustment system is rack-and-pinion. The list price for the RT0700C is $218, with street prices currently around $120.
