A Small, Square Hole

A Small, Square Hole

I want to make a small square hole through a piece of wood. Is there a tool that will do that?

Mike Van Pelt: I suggest that you use a straight chisel and lay out the hole to size. A corner chisel would come in handy to clean up and square up the cut. You can also drill out most of the waste and then corner chisel it square.

Stephen Rosasco: A square cutter for a drill press, called a mortising attachment or hollow chisel mortiser, will work; otherwise, drill a hole a smidge smaller than needed, then use mortising chisels and a mallet to square the hole.
