How to Tell Red Oak from White Oak

How do you tell the difference between red oak and white oak?

Stephen Rosasco: Not to be obnoxious, but the red oak has a reddish tint.

Andy Rae: Split a small piece of the wood, stick one end in a bowl of water, and blow through the opposite end. If the stick makes bubbles in the bowl, it’s red oak.
