One Plane for Every Job?

One Plane for Every Job?

I need to buy a hand plane for edge jointing, but which plane is best? Block plane, jack plane, #4, #5, etc.? My boards run anywhere from 10″ to 5 feet and I’m only interested in using it to get the sides ready for glue up.

Michael Dresdner: The bigger the plane, the easier it is to true long surfaces, but larger planes are more difficult to handle, IMO. My favorite is a #5 Jack plane. It is small enough to control and large enough to give me smooth edges on boards.
