Rust-Oleum Gives Woodworker’s Journal Sneak Peek

Group Shot from Rust-Oleum VisitIf you’re one of those dyed-in-the-wool loyalists when it comes to the types and brands of finish you use, it might seem like there’s not much new that could (or should) be put into a can these days.

But if it seems like there isn’t much new “under the sun” when it comes to stain and varnish, sometimes all it takes is a new player in the market with some fresh ideas.

Application of FinishCase in point: the folks at Rust-Oleum stopped by our offices the other day to show us just how much new chemistry is possible in interior and exterior finishing products.

Rust-Oleum, you say…and wood finish?

after wipe of the finishYep, and they’re doing it in a big way with a whole new line of interior and exterior wood care products. We saw some fresh new stain colors and got the scoop on industry-first reflective additives that will make exterior finishes cooler to UV rays so they last longer. Rust-oleum’s got a new varnish sheen that feels like soft leather, plus water-based poly that takes an amber tone, similar to oil-based.

But, Rust-Oleum isn’t really new to wood finishes … even if the brand is largely known for spray paints. Varathane®, Zinsser® and Watco® brands – household brand names for woodworkers – also fall under the Rust-Oleum umbrella of products. So, there’s industry experience here, for sure.

I’m looking forward to trying some of these products out on future projects. If you do too, leave us a comment here on the blog and tell us what you think. I’m sure the Rust-Oleum folks would appreciate the feedback.

  • I love the Rust-Oleum finish. What attracted me was the time savings of not sanding between coats, and also the soap and water clean-up. I have used this on several projects now in the satin finish. I have since bought semi-gloss and gloss to try. Very nice product!

I recently had to match a new wood door to the old one right next to it for a customer and gave the Rust-Oleum products a shot. Well, the door was a near perfect match and the customer was very happy. I used a blend of three different colors to meet the customer’s expectations. The stains went on beautifully. On the plus side, you don’t have to wait long until time to finish! Great product.
