Using HVLP with Urethane

Can I use a high volume low pressure sprayer for urethane? Can I buy a HVLP gun that attaches to my compressor, or do I need a system that has the gun integrated with a small compressor?

Greg Williams: An HVLP sprayer can be used with most urethane formulations. The viscosity of the finish as sprayed is the limiting factor. There are HVLP “conversion guns” which will work off a compressor. Make sure the air delivery of your compressor (measured in SCFM, or standard cubic per minute) at the pressure required by the gun is sufficient. Conversion guns normally require a lot of air. A turbine system uses what is essentially a vacuum cleaner motor to supply a large volume of air at a lower pressure.
