Contest Winner Creates Cribbage Board

The opening move for the cribbage gameboard project that appears in the December 2011 issue of Woodworker’s Journal was Bruce Beatty’s submission of his design to the Woodworker’s Journal Google SketchUp contest — and he came out a winner.

Bruce’s SketchUp plans formed the basis for the cribbage board Woodworker’s Journal staff built to share with you in the December issue (on newsstands soon). He’ll get the actual project that was in actual magazine photographs for the how-to-build-it article, plus, of course, bragging rights.

He also may get a head start on his holiday gifts. “Every Christmas, I build a game for each of the families that come for Christmas dinner,” Bruce told us. Last year’s game was last man standing; this year, count on cribbage. “My family does play cribbage, but only rarely; maybe the new boards will stimulate more interest,” Bruce said.

Bruce, who lives in Orangeville, Ontario in Canada and works as a training officer for his local fire department, has already found his interest in both woodworking and the free computer-aided design software. Other than the Christmas-time game gifts, he mostly builds furniture for his family and friends. He says, “Woodworking is a great hobby, and designing in SketchUp just adds to the fun. I draw every project prior to the actual build: it works just like an electronic prototype, so you actually build it twice.”
