Eliminating “Old” Smell

Eliminating “Old” Smell

What is the best way to eliminate the “old” smell from an antique dresser and its drawers?

Carol Reed: Used dryer softener sheets would be my choice.

Michael Dresdner: You might want to clean the drawers first. Often, the smell comes from mildew, and killing it goes a long way toward eliminating the odor. Laundry bleach does an excellent job against mildew. In extreme cases, you might resort to sealing the drawers with a thin coat of dewaxed shellac or Zinsser SealCoat, which will seal in odors very effectively.
