Jointing with a Router Table

Jointing with a Router Table

To use a router table as a jointer, do you recommend using a spiral bit or a straight bit for the edges? Or is there is a better way?

Michael Dresdner: Would I be called snide if I said that using a jointer might be a better way? All kidding aside, I would definitely choose a spiral bit. Granted, they are both more expensive and very difficult to sharpen, but you’ll get far less tearout, grabbing, and washboarding with a good spiral bit.

Linda Haus: I would not use a spiral bit. I would use a straight bit, because the cutting edge is one solid edge. You’ll have a truer cut, when trying to use a router as a jointer, with that constant cutting edge.
