What is the best wood or material to use for the top of a router table?

Carol Reed: I like double-sided, three-quarter-inch melamine in a double thickness. It is smooth, flatter than plywood, and will stay flat with proper support beneath it. It is clean and easy to keep clean and takes wax well for smooth passing of the wood past the cutter.
