I’m refinishing 40-year-old plywood kitchen cabinet doors and am nervous about sanding through the veneer, but it appears to be about one eighth inch thick. Is that possible? Did they make cabinet grade plywood 40 years ago that had thicker veneers than they do today?
Michael Dresdner: Yes, but not that thick. An eighth of an inch is closer to sawn veneer, which is typically used for specialty work such as marquetry.
Carol Reed: Probably, but why sand? Remove the old finish chemically; sand only to remove raised grain to prepare a surface for a new finish.
