My shop is 100 feet from my house. I would like to put in a smoke detector. Will woodworking dust compromise that, and do they make units that will send a signal to a remote unit that far away?
Michael Dresdner: Yes to both. Some smoke detectors can be set off by wood dust, and people do make smoke detection systems that beep or ring in a remote spot, and even those that automatically dial a phone number. You might want to start by speaking with your local fire marshal not only for suggestions of how to deal with this challenge safely, but also for recommendations of trustworthy companies in your local area who deal in such items.
